Six Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-State Recognition

2016-17 VaSID Academic All-State Team

ASHLAND, Va. – The 2016-17 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State team was announced and 217 student-athletes from 37 colleges and universities across the state were recognized.

To be eligible a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average, and be a sophomore or higher.

The six Eagles recognized included two women's track & field All-Americans with near-perfect GPAs, both of whom earned first team Academic All-America honors. Amber Celen was a three-time national champion and the USTFCCCA Indoor National Track Athlete of the Year while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA, and senior Katelyn Senger graduated with a 3.99 GPA after placing fourth nationally in the discus.

Another first team All-American was junior Christina Herbert- the national champion and national Player of the Year in women's golf, all while maintaining a 3.92 GPA.

Football captain Davey Hardesty was a two-time All-State selection at linebacker, while maintaining a 3.79 GPA. He was the only ODAC player named a national semifinalist for the NFF Campbell Trophy- college football's top scholar-athlete honor.

Junior Blake Mann, who is the program's all-time leading goalscorer (111) with a 3.93 GPA, becomes the first Academic All-State selection for the Bridgewater men's lacrosse program.

Finally, volleyball All-Region selection Abby Mills (3.64 GPA), earned Bridgewater's Geisert Scholar-Athlete award, along with Hardesty, which is presented to the school's top senior scholar-athlete.

VaSID is comprised of sports information or athletics communications professionals from intercollegiate institutions throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. Membership is open to any individual affiliated with one of the state's institutions at the NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, USCAA, NJCAA, community college and independent levels, provided that individual's area of responsibility lies within the realm of sports information.
