BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College's 2012 baseball schedule features 13 games against teams that played in the 2011 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships.
The highlight of the schedule is a spring break trip to Florida where the Eagles will play six games in four days. Three of the BC opponents played in the 2011 NCAA playoffs.
The Eagles open the spring break trip with a doubleheader against Mount Union on March 4. Mount Union finished the 2011 season with a 17-20 record.
Bridgewater then plays Thomas More on March 7. The Saints, 2011 NCAA team, are ranked No. 13 in the 2012 Collegiate Baseball Preseason Top 25 and finished with a 29-9 record a year ago. The Eagles lost a pair of one-run games to the Saints last year.
On March 7, the Eagles face Husson in a a twinbill. Husson, also a 2011 NCAA team, finished with a 29-17 record in 2011.
Bridgewater closes out its Florida trip on March 8 with a single game against Aurora, another 2011 NCAA tournament squad. Aurora posted a 30-14 record in 2011.
The Eagles also have a home-and-home series set with in-state non-conference rivals Shenandoah and Christopher Newport - both 2011 NCAA teams. CNU is ranked No. 4 in the 2012 preseason national poll while Shenandoah recevied votes in the preseason rankings. Shenandoah swept two games from BC last year while the Eagles split a pair against CNU.
Also on the non-conference slate is a doubleheader against Messiah and a single game against Catholic - two more teams with NCAA experience in 2011. A year ago, the Eagles lost at Catholic while splitting a doubleheader with Messiah.
Bridgewater's 14 non-conference opponents on this year's slate finished the 2011 season with a combined 335-223-1 won-loss record - a .600 winning percentage.
Bridgewater opens its season on Feb. 12 with a doubleheader at N.C. Wesleyan.
