LYNCHBURG, Va. - Lynchburg College handed Bridgewater its first ODAC loss of the young season, defeating the Eagles 8-3 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader.
The second game of the twinbill was stopped after two scoreless innings due to lightning in the area. The game will be played Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
Bridgewater grabbed an early lead Saturday when Kenner Berry belted a solo homer in the top of the first inning.
Lynchburg tied the score with a run in the second and then scored three runs - all unearned - in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. The Hornets had just one hit in the third, but two walks, two hit batsmen and the costly error paved the way for the three runs and a 4-1 lead.
The Hornets extended the lead to 6-1 before the Eagles tried to mount a late-inning rally. Berry doubled in the seventh and scored on Luke Paczewski's single to make the score 6-2. Austin Batten added a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth to pull the Eagles to within 6-3, but the Hornets tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to finish off the 8-3 victory.
Lynchburg had just five hits in the game, but 11 free passes - seven walks and four hit batsmen - led to the Eagles downfall.
Bridgewater had 10 hits with Paczewski leading the way with three base hits. Berry and Batten added two hits each.
