HARRISONBURG, Va. - Eastern Mennonite advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC men's soccer tournament with a 2-0 victory Sunday evening over Bridgewater College in the first round of tournament play.
The Royals got on the board early when Bryce Shank played a long through ball to the right side and Adam Moyer punched the ball past Bridgewater keeper Travis Morris for a 1-0 EMU in the ninth minute of play.
The score remained 1-0 until the 85th minute, but in between both teams had several opportunities to score.
Bridgewater's best chance to knot the score came late in the game when Sawyer Janes beat the EMU goalie from the right side from 20 yards out, but the ball ricocheted off the far post and back onto the playing field instead of bouncing into the net.
The Royals added an insurance goal late when Mitchell Leap scored for a 2-0 lead with just more than five minutes left to play.
EMU held a 19-11 edge in shots while corner kicks were even at five apiece. Morris recorded five saves in his final game for the Eagles.
Bridgewater finishes the season at 7-11-1 overall. EMU improves to 10-7-2 and will host Lynchburg in a semifinal game.
