Royals Rally To Defeat Eagles In Second Overtime

Marc Almeida controls the ball against EMU.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Eastern Mennonite rallied from an early 3-0 deficit Wednesday to defeat Bridgewater College, 4-3, in ODAC men's soccer action. The Royals scored the winning goal with just 1:58 left in the second overtime period.

The Eagles dominated play in the first 30 minutes, racing out to a three-goal lead.

Bridgewater (7-8. 4-3 in the ODAC)  scored early when Garrett Logan headed in a goal off a cross from Marc Almeida just 4:06 into the contest. Less than four minutes later, the Eagles struck again when Leo Alcantara scored on a free kick from 20 yards out. Alcantara hit his shot over the wall and into the upper left corner in the eighth minute.

The Eagles connected again in the 27th minute when Almeida crossed a ball into the box and Thomas White hit a low, driving shot past the keeper for a 3-0 Eagles lead.

The visitors got on the board late in the first half when Joshua Chiquillo scored on a free kick from 25 yards out when his shot hit the cross bar and bounced into the goal.

The Royals threatened again in the 42nd minute when Emmanuel Boamah worked free for a header, but his shot hit the cross bar and bounced away.

EMU (9-5, 3-4 in the ODAC)  pulled closer with a goal early in the second half when Jesus Trejo scored on a shot to the far post from the left side, cutting the Eagles lead to 3-2.

Both teams threatened in the next 10 minutes. EMU's Daniel Obour hit the post with a shot from just outside the box while Bridgewater's Eric Hogge worked free behind the Royals' defense, but his shot was stopped by Royals' keeper Matthew Overacker.

The Royals pulled even in the 65th minute off a set piece. David Shafer sent a corner kick to the far post where Boamah elevated and scored on a header to tie the score at 3-3.

Bridgewater threatened to regain the lead two minutes later, but White's shot from the right side hit the cross bar and bounced back into the box where the Royals were able to clear it with a long kick past midfield.

The Eagles had one more opportunity to regain the lead in regulation when Alcantara worked free for a shot from 20 yards out, but the attempt sailed just over the crossbar.

EMU had the best opportunity in the first overtime when the Royals were awarded a corner kick in the final minute. Trejo's shot, however, was high as the teams headed for the second overtime.

White had a chance in the opening minute of the second OT when he beat his defender on the left flank. His shot from a tight angle rolled just wide of the far post, leaving the score tied at 3-3.

The Royals tallied the game winner on a set piece in the 108th minute of play. Shafer took a free kick from 30 yards out on the left side and sent his kick to the center of the box. Boamah headed his shot to the back post and into the net to complete the EMU comeback.

The Royals held a 27-16 edge in shots and a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Quentin Boric finished the contest with four saves for the Eagles. Overacker entered the contest to start the second half for the Royals and played the rest of the way in goal, finishing with three saves.

Bridgewater returns to action Saturday evening when the Eagles travel to Lynchburg to play Randolph College. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
