Men’s Tennis Holds Off Wittenberg, 5-4

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – After opening a one-match lead at the conclusion of doubles play, the Bridgewater Eagles men's tennis team scraped out three wins in singles action to edge Wittenberg University by a 5-4 score on day three of the PTR Spring TennisFest.

The tandem of Peter Hawkins and Christian Lynn dropped the lone doubles match for the Eagles at number one in an 8-3 loss.

Freshmen Evan Stack and Brandon Larsen picked up a close 9-7 win at number two to even the match up at one win each, before the duo of freshman Mike Cable and senior Brent Floyd earned an 8-6 win at number three to put the Eagles up after doubles play.

Hawkins got the Eagles rolling in singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at number one, before Brandon Larsen took a 7-5, 3-0 lead at number two before being forced to retire due to injury.

Floyd posted a 5-1 win at number three as the Stuarts Draft, Va. native earned the victory due to the Wittenberg player retiring early midway through the first set.

Stack secured the win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at number four, while Lynn dropped a tough 7-5, 6-3 decision at number five.

Sophomore Sam Churchill rounded out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 loss at number six.

Bridgewater is back in action on Friday when they wrap up the PTR Spring TennisFest with a matchup with Methodist. Start time is set for 11:30 a.m.
