Softball Puts Three On All-Conference Teams

FOREST, Va. – Three Bridgewater College softball players were recognized for their efforts during the 2014 season by being named to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) all-conference softball teams announced on Wednesday morning.

Senior Brea Hinegardner led the way for the Eagles with a second-team nod while Lauren Jenkins and Brianna Cox each picked up third-team selections to round out Bridgewater's three players honored.

Hinegardner turned in a stellar senior season with the Eagles en route to picking up her first all-conference honor. The Woodstock, Va. native had a career year at the plate with a .340 batting average and eight home runs. Her eight homers ranks in a tie for seventh-most in a single season in Bridgewater program history and is the highest number of home runs in a year since Emily Morris belted nine in 2010. Hinegardner also pushed across 33 runs on the year and hit six doubles and three triples.

Cox and Jenkins each picked up third-team honors with the tandem being named to the all-conference list for the first time in their young careers with the Eagles.

Cox went 12-9 in the circle for the Eagles and owned a 2.15 ERA on the year. In league games, opponents hit just .196 against the Bumpass, Va. native while Cox struck out 30 ODAC batters on the year.

Jenkins was stellar during her rookie season with the Eagles and parlayed her efforts into a third-team selection. The freshman started her career with a 17-game hitting streak. On the season, Jenkins led the team with a .366 average. Her 48 hits also led the Eagles team, while her 30 RBI ranked second behind Hinegardner.

Two-time reigning ODAC champion Virginia Wesleyan College secured three major honors as part of the 2014 All-ODAC Softball Awards. Outfielder Tori Higginbotham won her third straight ODAC Player of the Year accolade, while teammate Kristina Karagiorgis is the ODAC Pitcher of the Year for a second time.  VWC mentor Brandon Elliott picked up ODAC Coach of the Year laurels. Randolph College first baseman Hunter Glavé earned ODAC Rookie of the Year honors, and Lynchburg College second baseman Melanie Tenney secured the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award.
