KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Bridgewater College dropped both games Tuesday morning, with a closely contested 4-3 loss to Rhodes College and suffered an 11-0 defeat to Kean College, in five innings.
In game one, Anna Patterson's strong pitching performance of three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work, would be overlooked by the three unearned runs the Eagles would allow to Rhodes.
The Eagles would take an early lead with a solo home run by Carlita Tibbs, in the top of the second inning. Tibbs' home run is the first for Eagles this year. Rhodes would answer in the bottom half of the inning. Jill Healy would reach first base by an error on Mikalia Guard, resulting in Haley Rath scoring the first unearned run of the day.
In the next inning for Rhodes, Katelynn Bresler would score the second unearned run of the contest, putting the Lynx up 2-1. In the top of the fourth, Guard would score on a sacrifice fly to center field by Stephanie Carroll, to tie the ballgame up at two. The Eagles would tack on another run with Lacey Shifflett's RBI double to left field, bringing Patterson around to score, to take a 3-2 lead.
The score would remain the same until the bottom of the seventh, when the third and final unearned run of the day would doom the Eagles. Shannon Tierney started the frame off with a double down the line in left. Bresler would reach base on an error by Guard, advancing Tierney to third base. Caroline Sutton would hit into a fielder's choice to third base, allowing the game tying and game winning run to come around to score on the throw by Guard to first base.
Game two wouldn't go the Eagles way, as they ran into an undefeated Kean softball team and dominant pitching performance from Taryn DiGiacomo. She would allow four hits, one walk, and four strikeouts in five innings of work.
Kean took an early lead in the top of the first with an Emily Sabo single through the right side, scoring Carolina Ratti. Later on the in the inning, a Cayleen Rizo single through the left side would score Sabo, giving the Cougars a 2-0 advantage after one inning of play.
The Cougars would add four more runs in the top of the second. An error by the Bridgewater shortstop, allowed Emily Bissonnette to reach first and Tatiana Yourstone to score on the play. A single to the pitcher by Sabo allowed Bissonnette to score. The final two runs of the inning would come from a Rizo single to left center, allowing Sabo and Ratti to score on the play.
The closest the Eagles would get to scoring was in the bottom of the fourth, when Brooke Louden hit a double down the left field line with two outs. Carolyn Campbell would follow Louden by popping up to first base, ending the Eagles' scoring chance.
Kean would expand their lead in the fifth inning, to the eventual margin of defeat behind five runs scored off of five hits in the inning. The most notable being an inside the park home run from Jackie Riley down the right field line.
The Eagles get a break from the action tomorrow and return on Thursday with another doubleheader, with the first game against Beloit at 9 a.m. and the second being against Defiance at 11:15 a.m.
