BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College Eagles opened their 2010 women's soccer season with a 2-0 victory Wednesday over Stevenson University at Jopson Field.
A year ago, the two teams played to a 0-0 tie in double overtime. Wednesday's contest started in a similar fashion with the defenses controlling play most of the first half.
The Eagles broke through in the waning minutes of the half to take the lead. Stevenson goalie Lauren Weitzman stopped a Jacey Kelley (Road Newburg, Pa./Shippinsburg) shot from close range, but Kelley punched the rebound into the back of the net to put Bridgewater on the board at the 42:18 mark.
The Eagles' defense made the 1-0 lead stand until late in the contest when a goal by Brittney Harris (Laurel, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) gave the Eagles a comfortable 2-0 lead at the 87:50 mark.
Bridgewater keeper Shauna Manovich (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) recorded the shutout as she faced 17 shots and recorded six saves.
The Eagles made the most of their offensive opportunities at the Mustangs held a 17-9 advantage in shots.
Bridgewater returns to action this weekend when the Eagles travel to play in the Elizabethtown College tournament. The Eagles play national power College of New Jersey on Saturday and then meet the host team on Sunday.
