Women’s Tennis Turns in Solid First Day at ODAC Fall Championships

ROANOKE, Va. – Behind a sweep in doubles action and a trio of strong performances in singles play, the Bridgewater Eagles women's tennis team posted a solid first day at the ODAC Fall Championships hosted by Hollins University.

In Flight B singles action, freshman Katy Bergey (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) went 1-1  on the afternoon. Bergey picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win in the quarterfinals over Emory & Henry's Alyssa Wingate, before falling in the semifinals to Washington and Lee's Chelsea Mixson by a 7-6, 6-0 tally.

Senior Morgan McGhee (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) also went 1-1 on the afternoon in Flight C singles. McGhee won by a 6-3, 6-3 score over Caroline Hunter of Roanoke College. In the semifinals, McGhee fell to Hollins' Sarah Budrus by a 6-4, 6-0 margin.

In Flight D singles, freshman Brittany Wilson (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) was a 6-3, 7-6 winner in the quarterfinals before turning in a 6-3, 7-5 win in the semifinals over Anne Ailstock from Hollins. Wilson will meet Washington and Lee's Kerry Cotter tomorrow in the championship finals of the Flight D field.

In the 'E' flight, sophomore Olivia Stone (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) went 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the quarterfinals. Stone fell in semifinal play by a 6-3, 6-2 score.

Junior Ally McConaughy (Columbia, Conn/East Catholic) went 2-0 in Flight G singles action, posting a 6-1, 6-2 quarterfinal victory before dropping Sweet Briar's Joi hurd by a 6-1, 6-2 score in the semifinal to reach tomorrow's championship final. McConaughy will do battle with Trudy Siziba from Hollins tomorrow in the finals.

In Flight H singles action, Emily Schweitzer (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) also reached the championship finals, going 2-0 on the day. Schweitzer earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the quarterfinals before notching a 6-1, 6-2 over Afrika Anthony from Sweet Briar in the semifinals.

Bridgewater went unscathed in double's action on the day.

Bergey teamed up with fellow freshman Katie Gordon (Winchester, Va./John Handley) to turn in an 8-2 victory in Flight A Doubles to lead the way from Bridgewater.

In Flight B doubles, McConaughy and Schweizter cruised to an 8-1 victory, while McGhee and Stone rolled to an 8-0 victory in Flight C doubles.

Bridgewater wraps up the 2010 ODAC Fall Championships tomorrow in Roanoke.
