Women’s Tennis Chosen Fourth in ODAC Preseason Poll

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – After adding a number of new faces to the mix and graduating its No. 1 singles player, the Bridgewater Eagles women's tennis team was selected by the conference coaches to finish fourth with 87 points, according to the ODAC preseason poll.

Bridgewater completed the 2010 year with a 9-10 overall record and a 6-4 mark in conference action.

Juniors Ally McConaughy (Columbia, Conn./East Catholic) and Emily Schweitzer (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) headline the returnees for the Eagles.  McConaughy and Schweitzer partnered up and received All-ODAC Second Team honors at No. 3 doubles after posting a 16-3 overall record.  McConaughy also posted a 10-7 singles mark.

Sophomore Amanda Gorby (Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) also returns to the court after notching a 12-6 overall record in singles play.

Head coach Conor Smith also brought in a talented group of freshman that could help solidify the top six in the ladder and potentially push the Eagles into the top three in the conference.

Washington and Lee University earned 121 total points and received all 11 first place votes as it was selected to continue its reign atop the ODAC standings.  Hollins University locks down the second position after picking up 96 points, while Sweet Briar College sits in third with 94 points.  Virginia Wesleyan rounds out the top five, behind fourth place finishing Bridgewater.

Bridgewater opens the 2011 Spring season on February 19 when the team travels to Washington and Lee for a pair of ODAC contests against the host Generals and Lynchburg College.
