Women’s Tennis Blanks Wittenberg, 9-0

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – In action at the 2012 PTR Spring TennisFest, the Bridgewater College women's tennis team picked up its second straight victory with a 9-0 win over Wittenberg.

The sophomore tandem of Katie Gordon and Katy Bergey got the day started with an 8-4 win in top flight doubles action before the duo of Brittany Wilson and Olivia Stone earned an 8-2 win at number two to put the Eagles up 2-0 after two matches. For Bergey and Gordon, the doubles victory was their third in a row.

Seniors Emily Schweitzer and Ally McConaughy wrapped up the doubles matches with an 8-0 blanking at number three to hand the Eagles the doubles sweep.

Gordon got things started in singles play with an easy 6-2, 6-0 victory at number one, before Bergey sealed the match with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at number two.

Schweitzer bumped up to play number three where she fell in the first set by a 6-1 score before closing out the match with 6-4 and 10-4 victories in sets two and three to earn the win.

Stone posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at number four, before McConaughy cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at number five.

Junior Rita Murphy won by default at number six singles to close out the match to give Bridgewater a 9-0 victory.

Bridgewater is back in action on Friday when it tangles with Methodist in the final matchup of the PTR Spring TennisFest for the Eagles. Action is set for an 11:30 a.m. start.
