BRIDGEWATER, Va. – After drawing to a 4-4 deadlock after doubles play and five singles matches, sophomore Olivia Stone earned a three-set win at number five singles to propel the Bridgewater Eagles women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Hollins in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Thursday.
Hollins took the first two doubles matches as the tandem of Katy Bergey and Katie Gordon dropped an 8-6 decision at number one singles before the duo of Brittany Wilson and Olivia Stone fell by an 8-3 margin at number two.
Hollins picked up its third win of the day in top flight singles action. Gordon was victorious in the first set by a 6-3 score, but fell in the second set by a 6-1 tally to force a third set. In the third-set tiebreaker, Gordon dropped a 6-1 decision to fall in the match.
Bergey got the Eagles back on track with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at number two singles before Wilson drew the match to a 3-3 draw with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at number three.
Schweitzer dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision at number four to put Hollins up by a 4-3 tally before McConaughy earned an easy 6-0, 6-2 win to push the match to a 4-4 draw with the number five singles affair yet to be decided.
Stone claimed the first set by a 6-4 margin before giving back a set with a 6-4 loss in set number two. In the third-set tiebreaker, Stone jumped ahead by a 5-1 score before dropping three straight points to bring the tiebreak to a 5-4 score. The sophomore won two straight points to earn the win and propel the Eagles to the victory over Hollins.
Bridgewater is back in action on Sunday when the Eagles do battle with Averett. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
