Roanoke Slips Past Eagles 5-4 In Key Women's Tennis Match
SALEM, Va. - Bridgewater College took a 2-1 lead after doubles play Tuesday, but Roanoke rallied to win four of the six singles matches to defeat the Eagles 5-4 in a key ODAC women's tennis contest.
With the loss, the Eagles finish the regular season with a 15-4 overall record and an 8-3 mark in the ODAC. Bridgewater finishes tied for third with Hollins in the standings, but Hollins will be seeded No. 3 for the conference tournament and the Eagles No. 4 due to Hollins' 5-4 regular season win over Bridgewater.
The Eagles will host a first-round tournament match on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. with Virginia Wesleyan the likely opponent. Bridgewater defeated the Marlins in the regular season, 7-2.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles against Roanoke.
At No. 1 doubles, Katie Gordon and Marla O'Bryan defeated Laura Dodson and Briell Smith, 8-4. Bridgewater's Miranda Donovan and Rita Murphy downed Brianna Carroll and Haley Goodes 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
Gordon rolled to a comfortable win over Leitch at the No. 1 singles spot, winning 6-1, 6-0. Donovan won in split sets at No. 6 singles as she defeated Kaitlyn Diskerud 6-7, 6-1, 6-1.
The Maroons won the four remaining matches to pull out the 5-4 victory.
Dodson defeated O'Bryan 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Smith took a 6-1, 6-1 win over Wilson at No. 3. McDowell downed Jessie Mitchell 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 4 position while Goodes held off Stone 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5 singles.
