Eagles' Season Ends With 5-4 Loss To Virginia Wesleyan

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The No. 5 seeded Virginia Wesleyan Marlins slipped past No. 4 Bridgewater, 5-4, Sunday afternoon in the first round of the ODAC Women's Tennis Tournament.

The Marlins took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and then managed to salvage the split they needed in the singles matches to move to tournament semifinals where they will meet the No. 1 seed, Washington and Lee.

Bridgewater's No. 1 doubles team of Katie Gordon and Marla O'Bryan picked up the Eagles first point with an 8-2 win over Sara Yousif and Stephanie Bittner.

The Marlins forged ahead with wins in the remaining two doubles. At No. 2, Victoria Ryherd and Mia Proctor downed Brittany Wilson and Olivia Stone 8-4. At No. 3 doubles, Hannah Parent and Rachel Calkins slipped past Miranda Donovan and Rita Murphy 8-6.

Ryherd stopped O'Bryan 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Parent defeated Stone 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 position.

For the Eagles, Donovan blanked Calkins 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 slot. When Bridgewater's Jessie Mitchell walked off the court with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Bittner, the Marlins held a 4-3 lead with two matches still in progress and both of those were moving into a third set.

At No. 1 singles, Gordon took the first set from Yousif 6-2, but the Marlins top player evened the match by taking the second set 6-1. Gordon held on to win the final set, 6-4, tying the match at 4-4.

Bridgewater Wilson and the Marlins Proctor were the lone players left on the court as they were well into their third set. Wilson won the first set 6-4, but Proctor bounced back to even the match by taking the second set 6-1. Proctor then outlasted Wilson in the deciding set 7-5 to punch the Marlins ticket to the ODAC semifinals.

With the loss, the Eagles finish the 2013 season with a 15-5 record.
