BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's tennis team won its ninth match in a row with an 8-1 victory Friday afternoon over Sweet Briar College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead by controlling doubles play.
Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins took an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles over Sweet Briar's Caitlin Delmas and Glory Bowman. At No. 2 doubles Bridgewater's Marla O'Bryan and Jessie Mitchell defeated Allie Reifsnider and Ashley Fletcher 8-3. Bridgewater's Holly Knupp and Whitney Cash lost the first two games at No. 3 doubles before reeling off the next eight for an 8-2 victory over Gina Rutledge and Maddie Mills.
Sweet Briar picked up its lone point when Delmas defeated Gordon at No. 1 singles. Delmas won the first set 6-1 and fought off Gordon in the second set 6-4.
The Eagles won the remaining five matches in impressive fashion to close out the victory.
Hawkins defeated Bowman 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and O'Bryan downed Reifsnider 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3. Mitchell turned back Rutledge 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 while Knupp blanked Fletcher 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 flight. Cash took an 8-0 victory at No. 6 over Megan Johnston.
