Women's Tennis Defeats E&H For 11th Straight Victory
BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team ran its winning streak to 11 in a row with a 7-2 victory Sunday afternoon over Emory & Henry College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.
Prior to the start of Sunday's match, the college's tennis courts were dedicated to honor legendary Bridgewater College coach Laura Mapp, who worked at the College for nearly four decades. The courts are now known as the Mapp Tennis Facility.
Emory & Henry travelled with just four players so the Eagles won the No. 3 doubles match and the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches by default.
Bridgewater clinched the match by winning the two doubles matches that were contested.
Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins defeated Stella Di Michele and Lauren Riner 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles position. At No. 2, Brittany Wilson and Jessie Mitchell held off Alyssa Wingate and Meredith Yeary by a score of 8-6.
The two teams split the four singles matches that were contested.
Bridgewater picked up victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Hawkins turned back Wingate in straight sets at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-1 while Mitchell defeated Riner 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4.
Di Michele defeated Gordon 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for the Wasps first point. At No. 3, Yeary outlasted Wilson in split sets. Yeary rolled to 6-1 victory in the first set, but Wilson answered with a convincing 6-0 win to even the match. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner with Yeary prevailing 10-5.
Bridgewater returns to action Tuesday when the Eagles host Roanoke in a key conference matchup.
