Eagles Drop Tough 5-4 Decision To Yellow Jackets

ASHLAND, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team suffered a tough 5-4 loss Wednesday to Randolph-Macon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

The Yellow Jackets grabbed the lead by winning two of the three doubles matches.

The Eagles picked up their lone point at No. 2 when Brittany Wilson and Marla O'Bryan defeated Kelsie Grice and Olayemisi Ogunshina, 8-5.

Macon's Melissa Tomlin and Molly Jesserman stopped Holly Knupp and Jessie Mitchell at the No. 3 doubles slot 8-1. The Yellow Jackets picked up a key win at No. 1 where Angelina Sportelli and Toni McDonald edged Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins 8-6. The Gordon-Hawkins duo came into the match with 11 straight wins at No. 1 doubles.

The Eagles won at the top of the singles ladder with victories at No. 1 and No. 2. Gordon defeated Sportelli at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1 while Hawkins rallied from a 6-1 first set loss to defeat Grice by winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-1.

Bridgewater picked up its final point at No. 6 when Knupp took a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Caty-Betz Holcomb.

The Yellow Jackets won the remaining three matches to earn the singles split to secure the match victory,

McDonald defeated Wilson 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 while Ogunshine stopped O'Bryan at No. 4. Tomlin took the win at No. 5 over Mitchell 6-2, 6-4.
