Eagles Fall To Maroons, Grab No. 4 Seed In ODAC Women's Tennis Tournament

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College tennis team closed out its regular season on Thursday with a 5-3 loss to Roanoke College at the Mapp Tennis Facility.

Bridgewater (11-4, 8-3 in the ODAC) claimed the No. 4 seed for the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament. The Eagles will host a quarterfinal match in the tournament this weekend vs. Randolph College. Game time for the match will be announced.

Roanoke won two of the three doubles matches Thursday to grab the early lead.

Bridgewater picked up its point at No. 1 when Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins defeated Briell Smith and Jennifer Antoszyk 8-4.

Roanoke's Emily Henderson and Reed Kegel won at No. 2 doubles, downing Brittany Wilson and Jessie Mitchell 8-5. At No. 3 doubles, the Maroon duo of Emma Barker and Kristen McDowell held off Holly Knupp and Whitney Cash 8-5.

The Eagles picked up a pair of singles wins at No. 2 and No. 5. Hawkins won her match at No. 2 in straight sets over Smith 6-2, 6-4. Knupp also won in straight sets at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Barker.

Antoszyk turned back Gordon 6-2, 6-4 to take the win at No. 1. Henderson defeated Wilson 6-0, 7-5 at No. 3 singles and Kegel stopped Mitchell 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 4 slot.

The No. 6 singles match between Bridgewater's Cash and Roanoke's Haley Goodes was not finished.
