Eagles Defeat Randolph To Reach Women's Tennis Semifinals

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinals with a 5-2 victory over Randolph College at the Turner Ashby High School courts Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles advance to play No. 1 seed Washington and Lee next Saturday in the semifinal round. The match is set for an 8:30 a.m. start at Sweet Briar College. W&L defeated Guilford College, 5-0, in a quarterfinal match.

Bridgewater got off to a quick start Saturday with victories in two of the three doubles matches.

At No. 1 doubles, Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins turned back Patricia Verdezoto and Alison Henry, 8-4. The Eagles also won at No. 3 where Holly Knupp and Whitney Cash stopped Heather Parra and Sarah Parker, 8-5.

The WildCats picked up their point at No. 2 doubles where Dina Velazco and Jenna Sweet defeated Brittany Wilson and Jessie Mitchell, 8-5.

Knupp rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles for another Eagles point.

Bridgewater controlled play at the top of the singles ladder to pick up two more wins to close out the match. Hawkins downed Henry 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Gordon outlasted Verdezoto in a close match at No. 1 by scores of 7-5, 6-4.

Randolph's lone singles point came at No. 6 as Sweet defeated Cash 6-2, 6-1.

With the match decided, the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches were not finished.
