Women’s Tennis Falls to Top-Seeded Washington and Lee, 5-0

AMHERST, Va. – In the semifinal round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's tennis tournament, the Bridgewater Eagles women's tennis team fell by a 5-0 score to the top seeded Washington and Lee Generals in a contest played at Sweet Briar College.

The Generals swept the three doubles matches to jump out to an early advantage.

At number one, the tandem of Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins fell to Washington and Lee's number one duo of Meghan Buell and Chelsea Mixson by an 8-4 score.

Senior Jessie Mitchell and freshman Holly Knupp fell by an 8-0 tally at number two to Brooke Donnelly and Claire Cahill while the freshman duo of Whitney Cash and Leanne Smithers fell by an identical 8-0 tally to Allison Hupalo and Mary E. Shutley to put the Eagles in a 3-0 hole.

Washington and Lee secured the win with victories at number five and number six singles. Cash dropped a 6-0, 6-0 straight-sets decision at number five to move the Generals to within a match victory of the conference championship match.

The Generals secured the win with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number six as Cahill defeated Jamee Hardison to hand Washington and Lee a 5-0 match victory, ending Bridgewater's season.

The matches at number one, two, three and four singles went unfinished as the match was played to decision.

Bridgewater concludes the 2014 season with a 12-5 overall record marking the program's fourth straight season with 10 or more wins.
