HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Wilkes University handed Bridgewater a 7-2 loss Thursday afternoon in women's tennis action. The match was the final contest for the women's team in Hilton Head.
The doubles play was competitive, but Wilkes won all three matches.
Wilkes won the No. 1 flight as Jordan Vasarkovy and Dana Saliyev held off Jamiah Lewis and Whitney Kiser, 8-5. At No. 2 doubles Francesca Varela-Seri and Lauren Zielinski turned back Nicole Shifflett and Stephanie Barton, 8-4. Erin Volutza and Brittany Stanton outlasted Rachel Zarin and Rachel Crawford, 8-5, to win at No. 3 doubles.
The Eagles won two of the six singles matches.
Kiser took Varela-Seri in straight sets to win at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-2 while Crawford won in split sets at No. 6 over Stanton. Stanton took the opening set 6-1, but Crawford evened the match by taking the second set, 6-4. Crawford won the tiebreaker 10-7.
Barton lost a tough match at No. 4 falling in split sets to Zielinski. Zielinski controlled the first set 6-0, but Barton rallied to take the second set 6-2. Zielinski won the tiebreaker 10-3.
The Colonels won the other three matches in straight sets.
Vasarkovy stopped Lewis at No. 1, winning 6-2, 6-2. Volutza downed Shifflett 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles while Dagney Markle defeated Zarin 6-1, 6-1 to win at the No. 6 slot.
