Eddie Whitley is entering his third season with the Bridgewater Eagles football staff as secondary coach. He has also added the title of pass defense coordinator.
The 2018 secondary featured two All-Conference selections- safety Matt Dang and cornerback Davonta Womack. Dang was a first team choice and was also named second team All-State.
In his first season the Eagles had two All-ODAC cornerbacks in Isaac Evans and Josh Brooks. Evans was named a first team All-State selection by the Roanoke Times, and second team All-State by VaSID.
Whitley is a 2012 Virginia Tech graduate who was an All-ACC performer and team captain for the Hokies.
He earned second team All-ACC and first team All-State honors after starting all 14 games as a senior, recording 83 tackles and two interceptions. A four-year player who appeared in 54 career games, Whitley totaled 189 tackles, 6.0 TFLs, four interceptions and three forced fumbles. He won ACC championships with the Hokies in 2008 and 2010.
As a professional football player he has spent time in camps with five different teams in the National Football League. He was originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a rookie free agent out of college, before spending time on the practice squad with the San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles in 2012. He was then on the New Orleans Saints' practice squad late in the 2013 season and signed a contract with the Arizona Cardinals in 2014.
At Virginia Tech Whitley played for legendary coaches Frank Beamer and Bud Foster and was coached at the safety position by Torrian Gray- the current secondary coach for the Washington Redskins.
