BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Defensive end Rashad Wood was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year, as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its 2017 College Division Football All-State team.

Wood ranked third in the ODAC with 5.5 sacks as a freshman. He was also 15th in the conference with 7.0 tackles for loss, finishing the year with 27 total stops.

Wood is the first Bridgewater football player to be named a State Rookie of the Year.

Junior defensive back Isaac Evans repeated as an All-State selection, earning second team honors after being named a first team All-State honoree by both VaSID and the Roanoke Times last year.

Evans ranked second in the ODAC with five interceptions, returning two of them for touchdowns. He tied for third in the ODAC with two forced fumbles, while adding 54 tackles, three pass breakups and a blocked kick. He also set a new school career record with four pick-sixes.

ODAC champion Washington & Lee University earned three of the five major awards on the 2017 College Division All-State football team.

The Generals, who trailed #2 Mount Union by just two scores heading into the fourth quarter of a competitive 21-0 loss in the NCAA tournament, featured the state Defensive Player of the Year (Max Garrett), Offensive Rookie of the Year (Josh Breece) and Coach of the Year (Scott Abell). Hampden-Sydney College wide receiver Cam Johnson was named the Offensive Player of the Year.

VaSID names 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a University or conference in the state of Virginia.
