NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Despite 18 saves from goalie Emily Witzke, the Bridgewater College field hockey team lost its season-opener 5-0 at #6 Christopher Newport.

Witzke was making her fourth career start, and made eight saves in a first half that ended 2-0 CNU.

The period also featured two defensive saves by the Eagles. Kelsey Hicks turned away a shot by Ariana Samuel midway through the half. Later in the first, Witzke stopped Courtney Feist's shot, and Karinne Moyer cleared the rebound off the line.

CNU struck in just the second minute of action however, as Feist knocked in Rachel Cooke's penalty corner. Cooke then redirected a shot in to make it 2-0.

Witzke made 10 second half saves but the Captains scored again in the opening minutes of the stanza. Jackie Kotoriy scored from the center of the circle after a deflected shot fell to her.

Fiest would cap the scoring with five minutes remaining, making the final score 5-0 in favor of the hosts.

This was the fourth straight year that CNU was nationally-ranked when facing Bridgewater. The Captains have won three of those four contests, with the Eagles taking a 1-0 road victory in 2016.

Bridgewater will have its home opener on Wednesday- another tough matchup against Mary Washington.
