FERRUM, Va. – Freshman Caroline Quigley scored twice in the final five minutes of the first half, as the Bridgewater College field hockey team held off Ferrum 4-2 on Saturday.
Courtney Cooke's rebound gave the Eagles the lead in the 16th minute, after Laura Gretz' shot was saved by Mia Holmes.
Quigley had two shots saved in the opening 15 minutes of the half, but would help the Eagles take a 3-0 lead heading into the break.
Quigley scored on the final two shots of the first half, finding the cage with 4:56 remaining and then again on an Eagle rush with 2:28 on the clock.
Bridgewater had to sweat out the ending a bit however, after Sierra Magdaleno scored twice on penalty corners to make it 3-2, followed by three BC cards in the final 10 minutes.
The Eagles' defense held firm however, never conceding a shot during any of the three shorthanded periods of play.
Tessa Tierson hit the post in the final minute of play to nearly seal it, before Cooke finished off her second goal of the day to clinch the 4-2 win.
Goalie Ali Bishop made two saves in the victory.
Bridgewater (4-4 overall) starts off ODAC play with a victory. Ferrum, who is a conference member for the first time in 2018, falls to 2-6, 0-1.
The Eagles will travel to Shenandoah on Wednesday.
