Field Hockey Knocks Off Defending Champs 1-0

tessa tierson sets up a shot at the top of the area

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Senior Tessa Tierson's second half goal was the difference as the Bridgewater College field hockey team beat defending ODAC champions Washington & Lee 1-0 on Saturday.

With 7:52 remaining, Tierson dribbled just inside the area and ripped a shot that redirected off a Generals defender and into the far side of the cage.

The Eagles were all over the defending conference champs in the early going, creating four good chances in the first four minutes, but BC wasn't able to get a goal.

Tierson took a pass and dribbled around W&L goalie Ariyel Yavalar just 80 seconds in but couldn't pull the trigger as a defender prevented the shot attempt.

The next time down the field the Eagles earned the game's first corner, with Laura Gretz firing just wide from the top of the area.

Two minutes later Tierson sliced through the W&L defense and forced a blocker save from Yavalar. Courtney Cooke then put a shot wide left from a dangerous position.

Washington & Lee's Abigail Hancock nearly dribbled all the way in along the endline from the left corner, but couldn't get a shot off at the last second. Ali Bishop then stuffed a shot from Lauren Paolano, who was trying to post up in front of the goalkeeper.

Gretz took her second shot from the top of the area off a corner later in the first half, with Yavalar kicking it away.

Early in the second half, W&L's Grace Weise was saved from the left side. She collected the rebound and passed over to Haley Tucker, who fired just wide. Tucker soon had a breakaway chance that Bishop slid out to block.

Later in the second half Gretz quickly cleared a W&L corner and the Eagles nearly had a 3-on-1 the other way, with Tierson's pass just missing Caroline Quigley

The Eagles are 5-5, 2-1 ODAC and will play three times in the local area next week. After traveling to EMU on Wednesday, Bridgewater will be home twice on Homecoming weekend- Friday evening vs. Randolph-Macon and Sunday vs. Hendrix.

The Hendrix match will be Senior Day as the Eagles recognize their two departing student-athletes- Gretz and Tierson.
