DALLAS, Pa. – The Bridgewater College field hockey team opened the season with a 3-0 loss at 2017 NCAA qualifier Misericordia University.

In the Eagles' first game played with the new 15-minute periods, the Cougars took a one-goal lead in the first quarter. The hosts controlled a bouncing clearance and sent it right back into the mix, where Kayla Pogash finished it off in a crowd.

Misericordia took a 2-0 lead just before halftime after keeping another clearance in play following a kick by Emily Witzke. Madison Klopp kept the ball in and scored from the outer part of the circle to double the hosts' advantage.

A tight game featured just four shots on goal, with BC's lone attempt on target coming from senior Georgia Howard.

"It was a midfield battle and Misericordia did a good job capitalizing on our mistakes," said head coach Allyson Kenyon. "Definitely some things to fine tune for tomorrow. We saw some strong play from our new faces which is very promising."

The Cougars would add another in the fourth quarter to complete the 3-0 scoreline.

The Eagles will play again on the MU campus tomorrow and face another postseason contender, as Bridgewater takes on 2017 and 2018 NCAA tournament participant Gwynedd-Mercy at 3 p.m.
