FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College field hockey team had a fourth quarter lead but came up just short in a 3-2 loss at Mary Washington on Tuesday.

The hosts won it with just 11 seconds remaining, after keeping the ball in the offensive third as Bridgewater tried to clear. Mary Washington took it down to the end line and crossed into the middle to Lexie Dixson, who pushed it along to an open Morgan MacCartney at the back post.

The BC Eagles had the lead twice, but the first time it lasted just 20 seconds.

Jacqueline DiFulvio gave Bridgewater the lead less than eight minutes in. Caroline Quigley earned a penalty corner with a nice move around a defender, kept the ball in the circle on the play, and finally assisted DiFulvio to get BC on the board.

Mary Washington went right down the field and Ali Bishop stopped Izzy Scholz twice and then an attempt from Lauren Hopkins, before Bella Urcia finally stuffed it home to finish off the scramble.

Georgia Howard scored with 71 seconds left in the first half to give BC a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Bishop, who finished with 11 saves, made five stops in the third quarter as the Eagles were just 15 minutes away from their first victory of a challenging non-conference start to the schedule. Mary Washington tied it early in the fourth quarter however, before grabbing the last-minute winner.

Bridgewater (0-4) will now begin a run of six straight home games, beginning with Juniata on Friday evening.
