kelsey hicks breaks up the field

SALEM, Va. – Roanoke scored in double-overtime as the Bridgewater College field hockey team dropped a tough ODAC decision, 3-2 on the road.

The Eagles took a 2-0 first half lead and Emily Witzke saved a penalty stroke late to force overtime but Roanoke rallied after totaling 12 penalty corners after halftime (19 total).

Bridgewater struck first in the opening period when Meghan Obaugh ripped a shot off the post on a corner and Haley Runyon finished it off.

BC made it 2-0 in the second quarter off another rebound. Karinne Moyer's initial attempt was saved by Emma Clark but she followed it up and scored to double the Eagles' advantage.

Roanoke got a shot on target off a penalty corner five minutes before halftime, but defender Allison Thompson cleared it away with the crucial defensive save.

After the Maroons pulled to within a goal, the Eagles had to defend a corner at the end of the third quarter, broke it up and nearly countered the other way but time expired before they could capitalize on a 3-on-2.

Witzke made a diving save on Hannah Bunten with four minutes left in regulation but that led to another corner and Roanoke capitalized to tie the contest.

A penalty stroke was then awarded with 2:27 remaining and Witzke made a diving stop on Lauren Heffron to send the game into OT.

The Maroons had a 3-on-1 break in the first overtime and Runyon cleared it off the left doorstep for Bridgewater's second defensive save of the game.

The Eagles successfully defended another penalty corner with no time remaining as the first OT ended. Bridgewater also looked dangerous on several Courtney Cooke counterattacks, but Roanoke got the game-winner through Heffron in the second overtime.

Bridgewater is 3-10, 1-2 ODAC and will host Ferrum on Friday evening for Homecoming Weekend.
