LEXINGTON, Va. - Virginia Military Institute used the foul line to take a double-digit lead at the half and pulled away after intermission to defeat Bridgewater College, 72-37, Wednesday evening at Cameron Hall.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead behind two 3-pointers by Cameron Thurston before VMI used a 10-0 run to take the lead for good at 13-6.
Four points by guard Jesse Case pulled Bridgewater to within 16-10, but that would be as close as the Eagles would get.
The Division I Keydets hit 10-of-15 free throws in the first half and led 35-21 at the break. The Eagles did not go to the free throw line in the first 20 minutes.
Bridgewater struggled at the offensive end in the second half, making just 3-of-24 shots as the Keydets steadily pulled away to clinch the victory.
Case led the Eagles with nine points and Efe Balfour scored seven. QJ Peterson paced the Keydets with 19 points and Julian Eleby added 16.
VMI held a 39-30 edge on the boards with Kevin Saylor leading the Eagles with five rebounds.
Bridgewater returns to action Sunday afternoon when the Eagles host Greensoboro College. Game time at Nininger Hall is set for 2:00 p.m. Earlier this season, Greensboro rallied from a 28-22 halftime deficit on its homecourt to defeat the Eagles, 74-58.
