Sewanee Holds On For 79-76 Win Over Eagles

ATLANTA, Ga. - Sewanee used a 12-2 run to open up a 10-point lead with five minutes left in the game and the Tigers held on in the final minute for a 79-76 victory Saturday evening over Bridgewater in the Comfort Inn and Suites Holiday Classic hosted by Oglethorpe University.

The Eagles held a seven-point, 38-31, lead at the half and maintained the upper hand until Sewanee's Jordan Warlick hit two free throws to put the Tigers ahead 47-46 with 15:19 left in the game.

Bridgewater regained the lead, 50-48, on a jumper by Monte Simpkins and a 3-pointer by Dimetri Chambers put the Eagles up 53-48.

A jumper by Jimmie Sanders kept the Bridgewater lead at five, 55-50, before five straight points by Sewanee's Luke Smith knotted to score at 55-55 with 11:13 remaining.

Chambers knocked down another 3-ball to put the Eagles up by three, 58-55, but Smith answered with a 3-pointer to tie the score at 58-58 with 9:42 left.

The Tigers then outscored the Eagles 12-2 over the next five minutes to lead 70-60. Warlick and Adrian Thomas each scored five points before a layup by Cam Caldwell capped the run, giving the Tigers a 10-point lead with 4:57 left to play.

The margin was still 10 points when Bridgewater's Chandler Murray made two foul shots to trim the margin to eight, 74-66, with 2:45 left.

Chambers sandwiched a layup and a 3-pointer around one free throw by Sewanee's Matt Lee as the Eagles pulled to within four, 75-71, with 57 seconds on the clock.

The Tigers turned the ball over and Josh Cammon scored for the Eagles to make it a two-point game with 48 seconds left.

Smith then scored with 30 seconds remaining for a 77-73 Sewanee lead and the margin was three, 77-74, when Cammon was able to connect on just  1-of-2 free throws with 21 ticks on the clock.

The Eagles got a break when Warlick missed two straight free throws and layup by Sanders with 12 seconds left pulled Bridgewater to within a single point, 77-76.

Smith made two free throws with nine seconds left for a 79-76 Sewanee lead, but the Eagles still had a chance to tie. Chambers had a good luck at a 3-pointer from the left corner, but his shot hit the front of the rim as time expired and Sewanee escaped with the 3-point win.

Chambers led the Eagles with 16 points, all in the second half. Cammon added 13 points and TJ Turner scored 12. Caldwell paced the winners with 19 points and Smith scored 17.

Bridgewater returns to action Sunday afternoon for a contest against Oglethorpe.
