BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Freshman Kevin Ashcraft led all scorers with four goals as the Bridgewater Eagles men's lacrosse team earned the program's first shutout win with an 18-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Oglethorpe.
Bridgewater (3-1) opened the scoring in a slow starting first quarter when Mike Shaup rocked a shot past the keeper to build a 1-0 lead for the Eagles. Freshman Derrick Daniels rounded out a low-scoring first with a goal off of a pass from Thomas Maher to extend the lead to 2-0 after the opening frame.
Four different players got in on the scoring in the second quarter as Bridgewater built a 6-0 halftime lead. Nathan Muckle scored off of a Joshua Frey pass to establish a three-goal lead with 13:20 to go in the first half before Sam Cheplick scored off of a Sean LeBlanc helper to run the Bridgewater lead out to 4-0.
Freshman Isaac Ortiz scored an unassisted tally with 6:33 to go in the first half, before Ashcraft netted his first goal of the game in the waning seconds of the second quarter to push the Bridgewater advantage to six goals at the half.
The Eagles controlled play in the first half, outshooting Oglethorpe by a 29-5 tally as six different players got in on the scoring in the opening 30 minutes of action.
Frey opened the scoring in the second half with an unassisted goal before Daniels netted his second goal of the game with 11:47 to go in the third quarter to extend the Bridgewater lead to 8-0.
Ashcraft scored his second goal of the contest with 6:24 to go in the third off of a Paul Miniaci pass, before Miniaci answered with an unassisted goal with 5:55 left in the third frame to push the Eagles' lead to double digits at a 10-0 tally.
With 5:40 to go in the third, Ashcraft scored yet again, this time from an Ortiz helper before Frey rounded out the third-quarter scoring to push the Bridgewater lead to 12-0 with 15 minutes left in the contest. Ashcraft assisted on the Frey tally to end the third.
Muckle posted his second goal of the day to open the fourth quarter before Ortiz scored off of a Frey assist as the Eagles owned a 14-0 lead with 12:53 to go in the game. Frey got back in on the scoring shortly after the Ortiz goal, scoring off of a Kyle Kokkenen assist before Ashcraft posted his fourth and final goal of the game with 10:16 to go to push the lead to 16-0.
The Eagles rounded out the contest with goals from Muckle and Landon Elmore as Bridgewater cruised to its third victory of the season with an easy 18-0 win over the Stormy Petrels.
On the afternoon, Bridgewater outshot Oglethorpe (2-5) by a 53-12 tally. Frey and Ashcraft each led the way for the Bridgewater offense with five points each.
Frey and Jason Gerst each racked up four ground balls each on the day to lead the way for the Eagles.
Netminder Andrew Buss turned away eight Oglethorpe shots to post his first career shutout victory.
Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday at Piedmont. Start time against the Lions is set for 7 p.m.
