Eagles Open ODAC Play with Loss at #15 Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team opened ODAC play on Saturday at Lynchburg, losing to the 15th-ranked Hornets 19-2.

Lynchburg (2-3, 1-0) is coming off a national championship game appearance last spring. All three Hornet losses this season have been to nationally-ranked opponents.

Bridgewater got on the board in the second quarter with a goal from senior captain Thomas Maher.

Steven Cosgrove scored for the Eagles late in the third quarter to make it 16-2 Lynchburg.

The Hornets had a big first quarter, scoring 10 including a hat trick from Austin Stewart within the opening eight minutes.

Stewart added his fourth of the contest at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter, and Aaron Murphy capped the period for Lynchburg.

Murphy finished with three goals and two assists on the day, with Stewart collecting an assist to go with his game-high four goals.

Bridgewater freshman goalie Kevin Metzger played 30 minutes in relief of Andrew Buss, stopping over 50% of his shots for the second straight game. He finished with seven saves while allowing just five goals.

Jake Truman picked up three ground balls for the Eagles, while Metzger, Alec Kreger, Nick Sherman and Benjamin Vayer had two each.

Bridgewater falls to 4-2, 0-1 and will host Greensboro on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
