SALEM, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team held a one-goal lead in the second quarter and had several good chances to double it, before #17 Roanoke took control in the ODAC quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Blake Mann kicked off the scoring in the opening minute with a nice reverse flip shot.
Eric Husselbaugh's man-up goal made it 2-1 Bridgewater in the sixth minute of play, and Mann spun past his defender but hit the post with a chance to make it 3-1 in the opening period.
Mann hit his second pipe early in the second quarter. A flip shot by Mann just missed, and Sean MacLeish's turnaround shot by saved by Ian Davies.
Roanoke had hit their third pipe of the game by early in the second quarter, and tied it with 8:50 left on IV Stucker's goal. Jason Sarro struck just 17 seconds later to give the Maroons the lead. A Bridgewater turnover after a timeout led to a transition goal two minutes before halftime, as Roanoke opened up a 6-2 lead at the break.
Kevin Metzger made a save on a one-minute Roanoke power play early in the third quarter. His full-field clearance when BC couldn't clear in 30 seconds nearly went on target and could have troubled Davies.
Bridgewater then went on the man-advantage themselves but turned the ball over, and Roanoke found Sarro wide open in transition to make it 7-2.
Daniel Brown's man-up rip in the fourth quarter finally broke a 39-minute scoreless streak in the fourth quarter to make it 9-3 Maroons.
MacLeish's riser in transition cut the deficit to 9-4, and Bridgewater had another good chance to inch closer but Justin Calabrese's outside shot was saved and Roanoke added an insurance goal at the other end.
Jake Truman led the defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls, while BC goalie Kevin Metzger made 13 saves.
Roanoke got five goals from Sarro, and five points on three goals and two assists by Wyatt Naylor.
Bridgewater, who was making its first-ever ODAC postseason appearance, concludes the 2018 season with a record of 9-8. Roanoke moves on to face Hampden-Sydney in the semifinals.
