DANVILLE, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team scored nine times in a span of less than 10 minutes in the second quarter, beating Averett 25-2 in the Eagles' season opener.

Freshman Chris Martel led the way with five goals and six points in his first collegiate action. Sophomore Eric Husselbaugh added four goals and an assist.

In addition to winning 14-of-15 faceoffs and picking up eight ground balls, sophomore Mason Gauntt also recorded a hat trick on the attack. Kyle Graham, Sean MacLeish and Taylor Phipps chipped in with three points each as well.

After Gauntt had answered Averett's first goal, Phipps struck twice in a span of 1:36 to give Bridgewater a 7-1 lead.

Husselbaugh then recorded a hat trick in two minutes and one second, pushing the Eagles into double-digits with 6:36 still remaining in the second quarter.

Husselbaugh assisted Martel for his fourth point in just over three minutes, and Graham made it 12-1.

The Eagles beat the second quarter buzzer, with Alesandro Gargano assisting MacLeish for a 14-2 halftime lead.

Defensively, the Eagles shut down Averett until a goal with 11:35 left in the second quarter, on just the fifth shot of the contest for the Cougars. Gauntt got it right back by winning the ensuing faceoff and taking it down the field in seven seconds to restore a four-goal cushion at 5-1.

Bridgewater had started off the 2019 season with a 3-0 first quarter, kicked off by Justin Calabrese's goal less than four minutes into the action.

Jake Pangle scored off a Phipps assist 70 seconds later to make it 2-0, and Hunter Callan struck for BC's third of the opening period.

Joshua Anderson scored twice in the fourth quarter, to go with goals by William Spinnler and Ryan Costanzo. It was the first career goal for all three Eagles.

Senior Hunter Bagby played 38 minutes and recorded the win, while Robbie Noyes, Luke Fajack and Cole Van de Vijver all saw time in the cage as well.

Bridgewater (1-0) will play its next five games at home, beginning with Birmingham-Southern next Thursday.
