BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater senior forward Thomas White scored the game's lone goal Wednesday afternoon to lift the Eagles to their first win of the season, 1-0, over Averett University.
After a scoreless first half, White put the Eagles on the board in the 51st minute. White took the ball away from an Averett defender at the top of the box on the left side and connected on a shot to the upper far corner, giving Bridgewater the 1-0 lead.
Bridgewater had three chances during a five-minute span late in the game to pad its lead, but each time Averett keeper Colton Duchess was up to the task.
In the 75th minute, the Eagles were awarded a corner kick and Dutchess punched the ball out past the top of the box. Bridgewater's Trevon Phillips lined up a shot from 25 yards out, but Dutchess made a diving save on the low driving shot.
In the 78th minute, Caleb Needle slotted a pass across the top of the box where freshman John Meier chipped a shot toward the upper 90. Dutchess made a leaping save as he punched the shot over the crossbar.
Two minutes later, Needle threaded a pass from the right corner to Brandon Bryant who was cutting to the near post. Bryant got a solid touch on the pass, but once again Dutchess was in position for the save.
Bridgewater controlled play with a 19-4 edge in shots and an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Bridgewater keeper Colin Rouaud recorded the shutout without making a save during the contest.
Bridgewater is on the road the weekend to the Seahawks Classic in St. Mary's City, Md., where the Eagles will play matches against St. Mary's College and Salisbury University.
