HILTON HEAD ISLAND - The Bridgewater College men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision Thursday to Ohio Northern.
Bridgewater picked up its lone point at No. 1 singles where freshman Canon Secord rallied after losing the first set 5-7 to defeat Vinh Thai. Secord won the second set 6-3 and then prevailed in the tiebreaker 10-7.
The Polar Bears swept the remaining singles matches in straight sets.
Noah Elliott defeated Matthew Gordon 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Zach Beaschler downed Freddie Roberts 6-3, 6-2 to win at No. 3. Bridgewater's Sonet Gandhi lost a tough match at No. 4, falling to Hoang Do 6-3, 6-4. Ohio Northern won at No. 5 where Andrew Cochran stopped Nicholas Kiser 6-1, 6-1 and at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-0 win by Connor Christian over Robert Williard.
The Polar Bears started the day by sweeping the doubles action.
Elliott and Thail held off Secord and Roberts 8-5 at No. 1 doubles while Do and Beaschler topped Gandhi and Gordon at No. 2 doubles by the same 8-5 margin. Christian and Cochran finished off the sweep with an 8-1 victory at No. 3 over Kiser and Williard.
