BRIDGEWATER - Randolph College swept Sunday's ODAC doubleheader from Bridgewater College, winning the first game 5-2 and holding on to defeat the Eagles in the second game 5-3.
Randolph (12-14, 5-4 in the ODAC) took the lead in the opener with a run in the top of the first inning. Brandi Pruitt reached on a one-out single to center and took second on a wild pitch. Dianne Davis reached on an infield error, giving the WildCats runners on the corners. Pruitt scored on Lauren Morris' sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
The visitiors padded the lead with two more runs in the second. Jordyn Knapp led off with a double and, with one out, Tiffany Allen walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and both scored on Cpurtney Lucado's single to right, giving the WildCats a 3-0 lead.
Two more runs in the top of the fourth made it 5-0 before the Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on Sydney Layman's solo homer to left, her third round-tripper of the season.
Bridgewater scored again in the sixth when Mikalia Guard singled and then scored on Stephanie Carroll's triple to trim the margin to 5-2. The Eagles did get the tying run to the plate in the seventh as Brianna Whorley and Lindsey Talley reached base on singles, but pitcher Lindsey Chaney retired Layman on a grounder to second to close out the 5-2 victory.
The WildCats jumped out to an early lead in the second game. Two Bridgewater errors put two runners on base and Becca Montgomery belted a three-run homer to left for a quick 3-0 Randolph lead.
Bridgewater battled back to tie the score with a run in the second inning and two more in the third. in the second, Carroll led off with a walk and scored on Whorley's two-out triple to right-center, trimming the deficit to 3-1. With one out in the third, Carlita Tibbs doubled down the rightfield line. Guard followed with a run-scoring single to center, trimming the margin to 3-2. Guard moved to third on Carroll's double and then scored on a groundout by Mariah Wharton to tie the score at 3-3.
Randolph scored twice in the fourth to regain the lead. With one out, Allen and Kate Hodgkiss both singled and Allen scored on a single by Lucado for a 4-3 WildCats lead. With runners at first and second. Taylor Kraft hit a grounder up the middle that Eagles' second baseman Layman made a diving stop on. Layman tried to flip the ball to shortstop Ryan Kirtner who was covering second for the forceout, but the throw got away and that allowed Hodgkiss to score, making the score 5-3.
Randolph pitcher Gracyn Allen-Ingle silenced the Bridgewater bats the rest of the way to finish off the 5-3 victory.
Carroll led the Eagles' hitters Sunday as she finished 4-for-5 in the doubleheader. Whorley also had a solid day, going 4-for-6 in the two games.
Bridgewater, now 13-13 overall and 1-5 in the ODAC, returns to action Tuesday when the Eagles travel to Randolph-Macon for an ODAC doubleheader.
