SALEM, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team was eliminated from the ODAC postseason with a 9-7 loss vs. Shenandoah on Saturday.
Trailing 8-5 with two on in the sixth, Katrina Martin came inches away from tying the game, with a two-RBI double that hit halfway up the left field wall.
The Hornets added an insurance run in the seventh and got a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half to end the game.
Martin went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Stephanie Carroll was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
Consecutive RBI doubles off the wall by Meghan Stout and Morgan Henley gave Shenandoah a 2-0 lead before the first out of the game had been recorded. The Hornets led 3-0 after the top of first.
Bridgewater got it all back before making an out themselves. Torie Shifflett dove into first for a leadoff single, and scored on Martin's RBI double. Carroll doubled in Martin and Kaitlyn Tirona to make it 3-3, and the Eagles took the lead on a hit by pitch.
The Eagles turned a double play in the second, and Shifflett chased down a blooper to shallow right field to end the inning.
Shenandoah took the lead back with two in the top of the third. SU's Nikki Stone led off the fourth with a double off the wall and scored in the frame to extend the lead to 6-4.
Martin hit a ball to deep right in the fourth but it was caught right at the fence.
In bottom half of that frame, the Hornets grabbed two more and despite stranding the bases loaded, extended their lead to 8-4.
Bridgewater wraps up its 2019 season with a record of 23-17. Shenandoah improves to 19-22 and will face the loser of the 1:30 p.m. Lynchburg/Emory & Henry game at 3:30 p.m.
