Eagles Stay Unbeaten with 63-56 win at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. – Behind a 20-point outing from senior Jordan Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby), the Bridgewater Eagles women's basketball team moved to 6-0 on the young season with a 63-56 triumph over the Averett Cougars at the Grant Center.

Bridgewater jumped ahead by as many as 11 on multiple occasions, but a scrappy Averett squad chipped the lead to as little as five before the Eagles took a 27-19 lead into the intermission.

Out of the halftime break, the two teams traded scores before an 8-2 Bridgewater run put the Eagles ahead by 14 at a 39-25 tally with just under 15 minutes to play.

Averett wasn't finished as the Cougars mounted a 16-4 run over the next five minutes to chip the Bridgewater lead to two with under 10 minutes to play in the contest.

With 4:14 to play in the game, the Cougars gained their first lead of the game at a 49-47 tally before Burkholder answered with a three pointer to put the Eagles ahead for good.

Bridgewater ended the game on a 16-to-7 run to escape from the Grant Center with a hard-fought 63-56 victory.

Offensively, three players led the way in double figures, with Burkholder's 20 pacing the pack.  Sophomore Jessica Mullen (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) chipped in 14 in the victory, including eight in the first stanza. Junior guard Jenny Logan (Luray, Va./Luray) also reached double figures, scoring 10 on the night, including a perfect 8-of-8 performance from the charity stripe.

On the glass, sophomore Katelynn Hottinger (Linville, Va./Broadway) led the way with a team-high nine boards. Averett dominated on the glass, out rebounding Bridgewater by a 52-to-36 margin.

The two teams were even from the field, shooting 34% a piece, while the Eagles owned a 67%-to-52% edge at the line.

Bridgewater's defense continued to shine, forcing 28 Averett turnovers in the win which turned into a 28-to-13 discrepancy in points off of turnovers.

The Eagles are back in action this weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. at the Cruzin' Classic. Bridgewater takes on Ottawa on Saturday, before doing battle with Manchester on Sunday.
