SALEM, Va. – With 15 minutes left in the game, the Bridgewater Eagles led by 16, but a late Roanoke run in the second half was capped off by a Nicci Moats layup with 0.9 seconds left in the game as the Eagles fell by a 65-63 tally to the Maroons at the Bast Center.
Both teams started off lethargic, but it was Bridgewater taking a 3-2 lead early on. Roanoke regained the lead at a 13-10 tally, forcing a Bridgewater timeout midway through the opening stanza.
Bridgewater ended the first half on a 24-to-9 run to take a 34-22 lead into the intermission.
Out of the intermission, the Eagles built their lead to as high as 16 points before Jordan Burkholder picked up her fourth foul with 18 minutes left in the game.
Roanoke chipped the Bridgewater lead down to single digits with under 12 to play, before the Eagles used a quick spurt to build the lead back to double figures at the midway point of the second stanza.
Over the final stretch of the game, Roanoke used an outstanding post presence to cut the Bridgewater lead to single digits, before knotting the game up at 61 a piece with just over a minute remaining.
The Maroons took their first lead of the game at a 63-61 margin with under a minute to play, before The Eagles answered on the offensive end with a Jessica Mullen layup to tied the game up at 63 each.
Roanoke capitalized on second chance points to regain the lead when Moats' third effort found the bottom of the net with under a second to play to allow the Maroons to top Bridgewater by a 65-63 tally.
Jessica Mullen led the way for the Eagles with a career-high 30 points.
Roanoke was led by a 21 point performance from Moats.
The Maroons shot a fiery 63% from the field as they dominated on the offensive glass and converted the advantage into a number of second half points.
Bridgewater is back in action on Friday night when Hollins comes to Nininger Hall. Tip-time against Hollins is slated for 7:00 p.m.
