Cold-Shooting Second Half Dooms Eagles

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee outscored Bridgewater 41-16 in the second half Saturday afternoon to defeat the Eagles 71-45 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) women's basketball action.

The Eagles got off to a strong start, leading 20-12, with 7:54 left in the first half.

Heather Cantrell scored Bridgewater's first four points to keep the Eagles even early in the game, but the Generals surged ahead on four quick points by Jackie Clifford. Jessica Lam scored for the Eagles, but Samantha Sharman answered with a bucket for W&L, giving the Generals a 10-6 lead.

Bridgewater then hit the Generals with a 14-2 run to take an eight-point lead. Buckets by Oshene Kelly and Jessalyn Monday tied the score and a 15-footer by Lam put the Eagles on top 12-10.

A bucket by Clifford knotted the score at 12-12 before a 3-pointer by Bridgewater's Jessi Strom gave the Eagles a 15-12 advantage. Cantrell worked the paint and converted a three-point play and Kelly scored from inside, putting the Eagles ahead 20-12.

The lead stayed at eight as W&L's Andrea Ferrerro and Lam exchanged 3-pointers, but then the Generals reeled off six straight points to pull within two, 23-21. A three-point play by Kaitlyn Lehan pushed the margin back to five before a jumper by Katie Wildes pulled W&L closer at 26-23.

A layup by W&L's Emily Perszyk tied the score at 26-26, but a free throw by Lam put the Eagles up by one with 1:33 left in the half. Perszyk hit two foul shots to push the Generals ahead but Kelly worked the lane and scored to give Bridgewater a 29-28 lead. A steal and layup by Perszyk just before the buzzer sent the Generals to the locker  room with a 30-29 lead.

The second half was all W&L. The Generals opened the half with a 10-2 spurt to  lead by 10 and the Eagles never recovered.

Bridgewater shot just 22.7 percent in the second half while the Generals were on fire, connecting on 53.6 percent in the final 20 minutes.

Cantrell led the Eagles with 12 points and Lam scored 10. Clifford poured in 27 points to lead W&L.

The Generals also controlled the boards by a 44-30 margin.. Cantrell pulled down five rebounds to lead the Eagles.

Bridgewater is off until Dec. 19 when the Eagles play Maryville in the first round of the Transylvania tournament in Lexington, Ky.
