Eagles Knock Off Rival Royals, 76-62

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Sophomore guard Madison Baum just missed a triple-double Wednesday evening in leading the Bridgewater College Eagles to a 76-62 victory over rival Eastern Mennonite in ODAC women's basketball action.

Baum scored a career-high 22 points and tied the program record with 14 assists. She just missed the triple-double as she finished with eight rebounds.

Baum had plenty of help as three more Eagles reached double figures. Briana Moore made 5-of-6 3-point shots to finish with 17 points. Allie Coburn posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Rebecca Harvey chipped in with 14 points.

Bridgewater (14-8, 8-7 in the ODAC) jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead to open the game. Baum and EMU's Lexi Deffenbaugh traded hoops to start the first quarter, but Harvey scored inside and Baum knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Eagles on top by five points. 

Eastern Mennonite (9-13, 6-9 in the ODAC) took the lead at the 4:32 mark when a jumper by Deffenbaugh gave the hosts a 13-12 lead. The lead changed hands four more times with the opening quarter ending with EMU holding a 20-19 lead.

The lead was swapped three more times early in the second quarter. Bridgewater grabbed the upper hand on a layup by Coburn, making the score 23-22 with 6:14 left in the half. Bridgewater's Sydni Carey and EMU's Chrissy Delawder then exchanged jumpers to keep the Eagles' margin at one, 25-24.

Bridgewater then reeled off an 8-0 spurt to take its biggest lead of the half. Harvey got things started with a jumper and Baum followed with a jumper and two free throws, putting the Eagles up 30-24 with 3:04 on the first-half clock. Coburn capped the run with a layup, making the score 33-24.

The Royals answered, closing the half with a 7-0 spurt to trail by just two points, 33-31, at the break.

Brigewater outscored the Royals 20-11 in the third quarter to push the margin back to double figures.

The Eagles led 36-35 with 8:51 left in the third quarter before Bridgewater used a 14-0 spurt to open up a 15-point lead. Moore sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a jumper by Baum, giving the Eagles a 44-35 lead with 6:48 left in the third quarter. Coburn and Diamond Huskey added buckets before a layup by Moore capped the run, giving Bridgewater a 50-35 lead with 3:52 on the clock.

Eastern Mennonite outscored the Eagles 7-3 during the remainder of the quarter. Lexi Dean's short jumper with 40 seconds left, trimmed the Eagles' lead to 53-42 entering the final quarter. 

Another jumper by Dean midway through the final quarter pulled the Royals to within seven points, 60-53. The margin was still seven, 62-55, when the Eagles hit the Royals with a 9-2 spurt to put the game away. Baum started the spurt with a jumper and Moore added a 3-pointer for a 67-55 Eagles' lead with 2:40 left in the game. After a free throw by Coburn, EMU's Jess Washington scored in the paint, making the score 68-57. Carey then drained a 3-pointer to put the Eagles up 71-57 with just 1:26 left to play.

Bridgewater hit 28-of-65 field goal attempts for 43.1 percent accuracy. The Eagles won the game from beyond the arc where they made 11-of-21 shots (52.4 percent). Coburn's 11 rebounds led the Eagles to a 43-34 advantage on the boards. 

The Eagles, winners of five in a row, are back in action Saturday when they make the long trip to Greensboro, N.C., to play the Guilford College Quakers.
