WildCats Stun No. 18 Eagles, 2-1

Sydney Ryan gets back on defense.

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Randolph College's Sara Bane scored two goals Saturday afternoon as the WildCats stunned No. 18 Bridgewater, 2-1, in ODAC women's soccer action.

The victory was the first for the WildCats over Bridgewater since the 2005 season, breaking a string of nine straight victories for the Eagles in the series.

Bridgewater scored first when Bridget Fabiani slotted a pass to Sydney Ryan and Ryan found the right side of the net for a 1-0 Eagles' lead in the 23rd minute.

Randolph evened the score in the 32nd minute when Bane tallied with a shot to the top right corner of the net off an assist from Sam Paulette, knotting the score at 1-1.

The contest remained tied until the 72nd minute when Bane took a pass from Marie King and scored from 15 yards out to put the WildCats on top, 2-1.

Bridgewater put plenty of pressure on the WildCats down the stretch, but the Eagles were unable to find the back of the net. Randolph goalkeeper Zoe Waring recorded seven of her 14 saves in the final 18 minutes to preserve the WildCats' lead. Waring also got some help from her defenders as the Cats cleared a shot by Emily York off the line in the 86th minute.

Bridgewater held a 22-7 edge in total shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Eagles put 16 shots on frame, but found the back of the net just once.

The Eagles, now 11-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the ODAC, return to action Tuesday when they host Hollins on Senior Day. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
