BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Randolph-Macon's Gabby Nelson scored in the 87th minute Saturday to lift Randolph-Macon to a 1-0 victory over Bridgewater College in the conference opener for both teams.
Nelson entered the contest as the ODAC's leading scorer with 10 goals and five assists against non-conference foes. The Eagles kept the high-scoring forward under wraps for the most of the contest, but down the stretch she started to find openings against the Eagles' defense.
Just two minutes prior to her winning goal, Nelson worked free and had an open shot from insdie the box on the left side. The Yellow Jackets' top scorer had a good look at an open net, but left her shot wide of the near post.
On the winning goal, Nelson took possession past midfield inn the offensive end and challenged the Eagles' with the dribble and worked free for a clean look. This time, Nelson was on target as she slotted her shot with the left foot past keeper Sydney Davis for a 1-0 Randolph-Macon lead with 3:03 left in the game.
Bridgewater had several opportunities in the contest, but Bridgewater's struggle to finish the continued to plague the offense.
The Eagles had two opportunities early when Catherine Haufe took a shot from in close, but keeper Christina Newman blocked the shot. The rebound went to Hanna Randolph, but once again Newman was in position to save the attempt.
Randolph-Macon held a 19-15 edge in total shots while the Eagles finished with a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Newman recorded three saves in the first half for Macon while Edye Carr played the second half in goal and added five saves. Davis ended the day with 11 saves.
Bridgewater, now 3-4-2 overall and 0-1 in the ODAC is back in action next Saturday with a road trip to the University of Lynchburg.
