Yellow Jackets Hold Off Eagles, 6-3

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Randolph-Macon picked up a key conference victory Thursday afternoon when the Yellow Jackets defeated Bridgewater College 6-3 in women's tennis action on Mapp Courts.

Randolph-Macon improved to 10-1 in conference play and clinched second-place in the ODAC standings. Bridgewater dropped to 7-3 in conference play and is currently fourth in the regular season standings.

The Eagles took the lead in doubles action, winning two of the three matches

Stephanie Barton and Shannon Quinn put the Eagles on the board with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles over Landon Aud and Stephanie Yeager.

Bridgewater's Jamiah Lewis and Shannon Quinn held on at No. 2 doubles to defeat Melissa Tomlin and Molly Jesseman by a score of 8-6.

The vistors picked up a crucial point at No. 1 doubles where Caitlin Delmas and Toni McDonald edged Bridgewater's Whitney Kiser and Nicole Shifflett in a tiebreaker 9-8.

Randollph-Macon clinched the match by winning five of the six singles matches.

Tomlin was first off the court for the Yellow Jackets with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Shifflett at No. 3 singles. Next off for the Jackets was McDonald at No. 6 as she defeated Quinn 6-4, 6-0.

Kaitlin Dantzler put the visitors ahead 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Barton at the No. 4 slot. The Yellow Jackets clinched the team victory when Gaby Tersigni held off Kiser 6-4, 6-3 to win at No. 2.

Jesseman picked up the final point for Macon with a three-set victory over Cash at No. 5 singles, winning 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Bridgewater's lone singles point came at No. 1 where Lewis defeated Delmas in split sets. The two split the first two sets by identical 6-2 scores. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner with Lewis prevailing 10-7.

The Eagles close out the regular season on Sunday when they Virginia Wesleyan College.
