HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team won its first match in Hilton Head with a 9- 0 victory Sunday over Albion.
Bridgewater swept the doubles matches to lead 3-0. Nicole Shifflett and Stephanie Barton had the closest match, defeating Albion's Marceline Redick and Bella Scalise, 8-5. The Eagles No. 1 duo, Jamiah Lewis and Whitney Kiser, blanked Olivia Conover and Maddie Polich, 8-0. Rachel Crawford and Shannon Quinn teamed up at No. 3 to stop Namara Swillum and Abby Burris, 8-3.
Bridgewater's Rachel Zarin had the toughest singles match, splitting the first two sets at No. 5 against Albion's Scalise. Zarin controlled the first set 6-1, but Scalise evened the match by edging Zarin in the second set, 7-6. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner with Zarin prevailing 10-5.
The Eagles swept the remaining singles matches in straight sets. Lewis defeated Conover 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Kiser won at No. 2 over Redick 6-1, 6-1. Shifflett stopped Christina Rafaill 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 while Barton downed Polich 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 4 slot. Ashley Price finished off the sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Kirstin Moore.
