HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision Monday to Division II Ashland.
Ashland led 1-0 when Chelsea Myers and Hazuki Ogino defeated Bridgewater's Rachel Zarin and Ashley Price 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Bridgewater evened the match when its No. 1 doubles team of Jamiah Lewis and Whitney Kiser stopped Anna Hart and Camille Ringot 8-3. The Eagles took the lead when Nicole Shifflett and Stephanie Barton slipped past Natalie Keron and Elizabeth Kidd 9-8, 10-4 in the tiebreaker, to take the point at No. 2 doubles.
First match off the court in singles was No. 6 where Bridgewater's Rachel Crawford defeated Myers 6-2, 6-0 to put the Eagles on top 3-1. Ashland, however, swept the remaining matches to take the team victory.
Ogino downed Shifflett 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Hart defeated Kiser 7-6, 6-1 at No. 2, evening the match at 3-3. Ringot turned back Lewis at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1 to put Ashland ahead. Ashland claimed the deciding point at No. 4 sngles where Keron edged Barton in split sets. Barton took the opening set 6-4, but Keron evened the match by taking the second set 6-0. Keron then won the tiebreaker 10-8 to close out the match. In the final match on the courts, Kidd defeated Bridgewater's Shannon Quinn at the No. 5 slot 6-2, 6-1.
