BRIDGEWATER - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak with a 9-0 victory Thursday afternoon over Hollins University on Mapp Courts.
The Eagles swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Bridgewater's No. 1 doubles team of Jamiah Lewis and Whitney Kiser were first off the court with an 8-3 victory over Jhovanna Salmeron and Kate Woodruff. Nicole Shifflett and Stephanie Barton turned back Hollins' Amelia Verkerk and Sarah Jordan Snoddy 8-4 at No. 2 doubles for a 2-0 Eagles' lead. Rachel Zarin and Rachel Crawford completed the sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Kateri Johnson and Olivia Dannon.
The Eagles clinched the match with wins at the top two singles flights. Kiser defeated Verkerk 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Lewis scored the clinching point with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Salmeron at No. 1 singles.
Barton won at No. 4 singles, defeating Snoddy 6-1, 6-2 and Crawford stopped Valerie Sargeant 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 slot. Bridgewater's Shannon Quinn won her match at No. 5, defeating Dannon 6-2, 6-4.
The final match on the court was the closest of the day as Bridgewater's Nicole Shifflett edged Johnson at No. 3 singles. Shifflett won the first set 6-3, but Johnson battled back to even the match by taking the second set 7-6. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner with Shifflett prevailing by a score of 10-5.
